How Email Really Works

On the surface, email appears to work very simply, I type a message, click send, and moments later, it’s in the recipient’s inbox.

However, as we all know, there’s much more to it than that. From the sender’s side, there are routers involved, switches, mail servers, mail admins (to handle all of this hardware), virus checkers, and more. And this is all before the message even leaves the office.

From there, it doesn’t get any easier. The message then needs to fight through the same gauntlet on the receiver’s side. It’s a wonder how emails are ever delivered, let alone as fast as they are.

I recently came across an article that discusses this same issue. While the reading is a bit technical it provides a nice peek into the process behind the delivery.
